Labskin-M
Following a successful KTP collaboration with the Centre of Skin Science at the University of Bradford, Labskin is proud to announce the successful development of Labskin-M. Soon, this will be the first commercially available human skin equivalent with dermis and epidermis that contain melanocytes.
Melanocytes are the cells that give our skin its colour by producing melanin, a pigment that protects our skin from UV radiation (and sunburn). Melanocytes are also able to work as specialist immune cells, secreting cytokines and chemokines that keratinocyte cells don’t. Additionally, melanin is known to act as a sink for pollutants, toxins and medicinal products.
Labskin-M is able to support the growth of the skin microbiome on its surface. This is of particular importance as several scientific publications have shown that skin of different ethnicities present different microbiome profiles. Many factors contribute to these differences, with the quantity of melanin being a key one. Labskin-M is being validated with melanocytes from donors of different ethnic backgrounds to allow a more personalised approach to skin research in the skin care, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors.
